At the unveiling of the Lord and Taylor Holiday windows HAPPY HOLIDAYS 2007 NOVEMBER VA VA VALENTINO My dearest friend Valentinoand business partner Giancarlo Giammetti blew into town and there was one grand soiree after another for them. He has retired from design and his last collection will be the January 2008 haute couture but we will always have his archives. It is always such a pleasure seeing them as they adorn me with the best of their designs as well as beautiful parties not to forget how much fun they are. Dianne Von Furstenberg threw a beautiful dinner party in their honor in her magnificent home/studio in New York. Beautiful dresses, shoes, handbags! They truly spoil a girl. Bravo Valentino! (Photo : with Valentino and Giancarlo at Dianne Von Furnstenberg) 7TH ON SALE This night was billed as the world’s biggest sample sale and it coincided with the annual CFDA/VOGUE Fashion Fund Awards dinner. Kitted out like the courtyard of a medieval castle complete with fake torches, the 69th Regiment Armory was filled to bursting with deeply discounted designer merchandise and eager shoppers from Eve, Kate Moss, Mary- Kate and Ashley Olsen, Kate Bosworth, Elle Mcpherson and Jennifer Connely among others – all of us were doing our part to raise money for the fight against HIV and AIDS. (Photo : with Kate Moss at 7th on Sale Party) GLAMOUR WOMAN OF THE YEAR Glamour magazine hosted at Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall its yearly Women of the Year Awardsand this year like previous year’s was full of impressive women. The best of the evening was when Stephen Colbert presented House Speaker Nancy Pelosi with the Special Recognition Award with “Many have asked why, given the fact that she’s publicly advised members of the House of Representatives no to go on my show, I would honor Nancy Pelosi because she made history this year? Because she’s three heartbeats away from the presidency? No. I’m here tonight because i love glamour!” My friend designer Donna Karan was honored for the Style Force and Jennifer Garner as the Icon Next Door among others. (Photo : at Glamour Woman of the Year in a Donna Karan dress) EBONY FASHION FAIR 50TH SPECIAL I participated in the celebration of Ebony Fashion Fair 50th year anniversary! Wow! This historic and well respected spectacle of high fashion to the masses was adored by millions of people in its heyday. It has launched the careers of a lot of black models from Pat Cleveland, Billie Blair, Norma Jean Darden and Naomi Sims to mention a few. With this special i do hope that young women can get a glimpse of their fabulous past! (Photo : at my office for an interview for Ebony Fashion Fair 50th Anniversary Special) OCTOBER PROJECT RUNWAY CANADA I have finally finished taping this and what a blast it was! The designers are amazing and I will be very surprised some of them do not become major stars in the future. I have made some wonderful friends which will stay in my life and I fell in love with Toronto once again...what a joy the people are...and what talents lies within! Check it out if you are in Canadaand the rest of the world can check it out on You Tube with everything else in the world! HA! BRAVO SOKOL AND ELBER! I hosted a party for Mr. Howard Sokolof Barneys, and for Mr. Elber Albaz of Lanvin as they were being honored by the Fashion International Group at the Bowery Hotel in New York on a rainy night but that didn’t stop the fashionista turning out en mass! I looked glorious in a Lanvin short dress... and anyone who knows me can attest that i am not a short dress girl but somehow i seem to love all of Lanvin designs and everyone i agreed that i looked the hostess with the most! (Photo : with Sokol and Elber) CONDE NAST/BLACK BALL for KEEP A CHILD ALIVE Once again we were the hit of the town as Alicia Keys and I co-hosted our annual fundraiser Black Ballfor Keep a Child Alive and this year we honored Bono, Nick Redding for S.A.F.E. and Dr. Pasquine for their tireless work on AIDS in Africa. The concert was amazing! Alicia Keys and her band rocked the joint in this case the Hammerstein Ballroom with performances by Alicia Keys, Gwen Stefani, Sheryl Crow and the amazing Kathleen Battle! The afterparty was just as hot! As Amy Sacco rebuild her famous Bungalow 8 on the 7th floor of the building! I presented the award to Bono who at the end knelt by my feet and called me the true African Queen! Thank you all for the support and don’t forget to donate towards Keep a Child Alive (Photo : with Gwen Stefani and Bowie) THE STUDIO MUSEUM OF HARLEM GALA My dearest friend, Thelma Golden, does the most amazing job year after year in highlighting African American artistic accomplishment with this wonderful gala. This year i was the guest of Susan Fales Hill, Author of Always Wear Joy, TV writer and producer as well as a beauty in her own right. It is always to see so many beautiful black men and women in a society gathering such as this... it warms your heart and makes you proud. (Photo : getting ready for the gala at home) SEPTEMBER LACK OF BLACK IMAGES IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY My closest friend Bethann Hardison put together a panel discussion during New York Fashion Weekto discuss the lack of black models in the fashion shows. Naomi Campbell, Liya Kebede, Tyson Beckford and myself were among the attendees. The situation was starkly evident during the New York shows and some say it"s worse in Europe, where most black models don"t even bother to book shows in Milan. The problem isn"t only in the modelling world: we also pointed to the scarcity of black designers, photographers and executives in the fashion industry as a major issue. Is there discrimination in the fashion business? You bet! (Photo : with Liya, Naomi and Bethann Hardison) RENDEZVOUS BAY I was chosen to be the "face" of this incredible property designed by Peter Marino in Anguilla called Rendezvous Bay. Breathtaking beachfront location, world class resort design, legacy property tied to Anguilla"s most prominent family. The photos were taken by famed duo Rocco/Lespata with hair and makeup by Oscar James and Sam Fine and the result are breathtaking. If you haven"t been to Anguilla you need to check this island.... simply gorgeous! (Photo : on the set for Rendezvous Bay) ALEK WEK Dianne von Furstenberg and I hosted, for my dear friend Alek Wek, for the launch of her book a party celebration at the new hip joint Fashionista. Alek, is the story of a girl who rose from a Sudanese refugee to become an international supermodel. This is a celebrity autobiography with apolitical punch. It provides a glimpse of the conflict in Sudan and how it affected this young woman and rose against all odds. As an African we are very proud to call her our own. Pick it up... (Photo : with Alek Wek) AUGUST BEAU-TE! This month"s entry will be a shout out to all my fave glam squad. These are the boys that give looking good...a new meaning by giving me consistently glorious face...they surely give "good face." Beau Nelsonwas my makeup artist on Project Runway Canada as i hosted this summer and will be airing on Slice TV Canada starting Oct 8th. Not only did he make me look good but also was hysterically funny! We had a ball during all those long tv taping hours. He is moving to New York so I couldn"t be happier to have him so near. (Photo : with Beau Nelson) SO FINE! What can I say about Sam Finethat hasn"t been said by his numerous celebrity fans from Mary J. Blige, Tyra Banks, Vanessa Williams among others. He did my face for the cover of my beauty book The Beauty of Color and also he did me for the cover and the beauty page in the September issue of Ebony magazine (he also did Tyra"s makeup.) He can create a natural flawless face to a sublimely over the top glamour. Why do you think from Gabrielle Union to Rupaul keep him on their speed dial. He is truly one of the greatest makeup artists around who has such a good taste that I consult with him about all other matters of style. The man is a genius that I simply call him a fine friend. (Photo : with with Sam Fine) OSCAR WORTHY! Finally, let"s talk about Oscar Jamesand hair. Aren"t they the same? This soft spoken but engaging hair guru is a master at his game. There is nothing he can"t create. From a divinely elegant chignon to sexy delicious hair! What I love about him is that when doing my hair he considers everything before he starts from what I am wearing to where I am going. With a celebrity list such as Jada Pinkett Smith, Tyra Banks and Beyonce to rival any red carpet event he remains humble and unassuming. I trust no one but him with my hair... as Halle Berry trusted him when she won her oscar! (Photo : with Oscar James) JULY BLACK GIRLS RULE! It was a fun filled, funky music and and fashionable crowd at the Black Girls Rule party at Room Service Club in New York. All the beauties.. models and otherwise showed for this exclusive magazine"s Black Girls Rule!edition that i guest edited. I must admit it came out gorgeously and i am very proud to have been part of this. Take the crown, sistahs, Black Girls do Rule! (Photo : with Chanel Iman) PROJECT RUNWAY CANADA It was very exciting and fun doing this but at the same time very tiring. I am not used to working 10 hour days on tv sets so this was truly a first time experience. What made it bearable and fun was my 2 judges, Rita Silvan, Editor in Chief of Elle Canada and designer Shawn Hewson of Bustle Clothing and we had a rotating guest judges that brought new sense of humor and excitement and my faves were "trash flash" kings of fashion Traver Raines and Richie Rich of Heatherette. The former cowboy and infamous club kid birthed their line when Patricia Field (famed designer of Sex and the City) buyer spotted Richie Rich in one of his own leather tops... the rest is fashion history...dressing from the likes of Paris Hilton, Lil Kim, Alicia Keys etc... (Photo : with Judges Shawn Hewson and Rita Silvan and guest judges Traver Raines and Richie Rich of Heatherette) MARIE CLAIRE/SUPERMODEL HEROES What gets supermodels out of bed in the morning these days? Charities! That"s what. Thank you, Marie Claire"s august issue for showcasing an exclusive portfolio of your favorite supermodels (including me!) sporting the season"s new denim and photographed by supermodel and my dear friend Helena Christensen. Of course, my chosen charity is Keep a child alive. Signed limited edition of these will be auctioned off for all the participating supermodel charities...check www.marieclaire.comfor behind the scene of this shoot. (Photo: being photographed by Helena Christensen) JUNE BLACK GIRLS RULE! I am the guest editor of the highly anticipated Black Girls Rule issue of Trace magazinecoming out in July. I was very nervous as I wanted to create a bangin" portfolio in celebration of the new hot black models and didn"t want to leave anyone out. I also wanted to create a profound, thought provoking and new topical issues that is current and important in our daily lives. All in all i am very happy of how it turned out and i do hope that you all will enjoy it... check it out! (Photo: by makeup artist Robert Greene) SWEET TART We celebrated my dear friend Padma Lakhshmifor her double venture for the new season of Bravo"s Top Chef and her new culinary book Tangy, Tart, Hot and Sweet at the hot new joint The Roof garden at the Gramercy Park Hotel. All the adjectives of the title of her book could also be describing her! The food that was served were recipes from her book and they were DELICIOUS! (Photo: Padma and I) CFDA My dear friend and artist/jeweler extraordinaire of many years Robert Lee Morris received a well deserved Life Time Achievement Award from the CFDA this year! He is truly today"s most sought after jewelry designer and has created thru the years jewelry that were incorporated as part of the outfits for Donna Karan as well as Calvin Klein. I was delighted for him and he created this beautiful necklace for me for the occasion which I wore it with a red Donna Karan dress... it was spectacular. (Photo: In a Donna Karan dress and Robert Lee Morris necklace) MAY THE MET COSTUME INSTITUTE BENEFIT The annual Costume Institute gala is never a casual affair, of course, but as the extra drama of dressing in the spirit of the celebrated Paul Poiret - aka the self proclaimed "King of Fashion" - and it becomes Party of the Year. I knew there will be tons of long gowns and wanted something different ... so I opted for a Stella McCartneysaville row white 3 piece dinner suit and was adorned by Fred Leighton jewels and carried a high gloss black lacquer with silver top walking cane.... Very Chic! (photo: in a Stella McVartney suit and Fred Leighton jewels) THE WAYUU TAYA FOUNDATION I hosted this year"s annual benefitfor this amazing foundation that gets stronger every year! It was created in order to help improve the lives of Latin-America indigenous people while maintaining and respecting their traditions, culture and beliefs. Since its inception, the Foundation has helped save the lives of over 1000 children and has created a self-sustainable program aimed at improving the lives of women through education and earning capabilities. Famed lensman Sante D"Orazio donated one of my photo that he took and it fetched $7000! Thank you, Sante! (photo: with Patricia Velasquez, founder of Wayuu Taya foundation) SERGE NORMANT AT JOHN FRIEDA My dear friend hair guru to the stars, Serge Normant, who also tirelessly donated his time and expertise and love for our entire campaign of I AM AFRICAN for Keep a Child Alive opened his salon at the ever fashionable Meatpacking District in New York. The event was hosted by Sarah Jessica Parker and Ellen Barking, 2 ladies who definitely know when they meet a great hairdresser. But the thing about Serge is that everyone loves him because he is so NOT pretentious and all he wants is the "woman" to shine and look beautiful. And that he does INDEED! (photo: at Serge Normant Salon) APRIL VANITY FAIR/TRIBECCA FILM FESTIVAL PARTY We attended the annual Vanity Fair/Tribecca Film Festival party to start the Tribecca Festival in New York. As always it was really lots of fun and opted to wear a beautiful emerald green Bluemarine dress and red lipstick! I am usually rather shy on wearing red lipstick but i think i will wear it more often as everyone complemented how great it looked on me. What do you think? (photo: wearing IMAN LUXURY LIPSTICK IN IMAN RED) FOOD BANK/CAN DO AWARDS It was a beautiful summer evening in New York as we attended this wonderful event. Jimmy Fallon of Saturday Night Live and The Edge of U2 took home the honors there were no shortage of rockers.... from my husband to Michael Stipe, Lou Reed and Patti Smith as well as Elvis Costello who performed Where the Streets Have No Name. But the rock star of all rock stars was former President Clintonwho presented the award to The Edge. The highlight of the evening was Jimmy Fallon"s performance of Car Wash for Peace, a ditty urging people to "put down those guns and pick up sponges!" It was hilarious! (photo: with former President Bill Clinton) NY POST PHOTOSHOOT My friend Patricia Velasquez, President of Wayuu Taya Foundation, and I were photographed for the NY Post/Tiempo edition to promote and highlight the wonderful work of this organization which i will be hosting their annual benefit and auction this year in May. As usual it was wonderful seeing Patricia as she is so focused on helping the indigenous people of South America.... to find out more on this foundation, please, visit www.wayuutaya.org (photo: with Patricia Velasquez) MARCH RACHEL ROY I hosted a cocktail reception for my dear friend Rachel Roy"sSpring 07 Collection at Saks Fifth Avenue NY. Rachel is such a wonderful wife to Damon Dash and a great mom to her daughter Ava but most of you probably know her wonderful designs. Rachel"s designs are ageless and timeless... Elegant, classy and refined. This is how the modern woman should dress to work as well as play and not in those hoochie crap that is passed as "ghetto fab" because i know ghetto fab looks better than what is sold out there. Rachel"s designs are feminine and fashionable and that is sexy! check out www.rachelroy.com (photo: with the beautifully elegant rachel roy.) A BLAST FROM THE PAST For you art lovers this is a must have from the man who "discovered" me. Peter Beard: Art Edition signed limited edition is truly a work of art. "A stunning journey into the world of Peter Beard: Photographer, collector, diarist, and writer of books Peter Beard has fashioned his life into a work of art; the illustrated diaries he kept from a young age evolved into a serious career as an artist and earned him a central position in the international art world. He was painted by Francis Bacon, painted on by Salvador Dali books with Jacqueline Onassis and Mick Jagger - all of whom are brought to life, literally and figuratively, in his work. As a fashion photographer, he took Vogue stars like Veruschka to Africa and brought new ones - most notably Iman - back to the U.S. with him." (photo by peter beard 1975 in Kenya.) FEBRUARY COSMO GIRL! I was honored to have been chosen to be The CosmoGIRL! Project 2024 and i was interviewed by Alexis McFarlanewho is a Communications major and an African Studies minor at the University of Pennsylvania. Alexis founded and co-edits a magazine for women of color on her campus. She is 22 years old and originally from Toronto, Canada. I was so impressed with her interview and insight. Beside the important questions we also talked about girlie things like makeup and men! She is young, gifted and black! You go, girl! (photo: At my office with Alexis McFarlane.) HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ALICIA! Alicia Keys birthday was at Bed club in New York and it was so much fun. She looked HOT! and as always so sweet. It was all about the music, the music and the music. My god, the music was good. ... everyone was on the dance floor all night. It was a mix of old and new. If you have never been to Bed, check it out next time as it literally are beds and everybody lounging on them. It is a miracle that people get up and go home and not just go to sleep after all the dancing. I met for the first time one of my favorite artists, Common. He was cute and gracious and kept on calling me all night, Hail to the Queen. How cute! (photo: With Common.) JANUARY Chanel and Iman What's in a name? Chanel Iman! Shakespeare has famously said: "What's in a name?" Well, in this case quite a lot. The new "It" model has not one but two major names... Chanel and Iman! I have interviewed her for Vibe magazine, and she was sweet and completely star struck! Her career started in the Ford Supermodel World Competition and now as the darling of the fashion world.... she has already walked for designers Anna Sui, Dolce and Gabbana, Marc jacobs, Donna Karan, Missoni and Proenza Schouler. Half African American and half Korean, she embodies the new world beauty. (photo: With Chanel Iman) Angelic Voices Start the new year by being ultraistic by helping others. I attended this wonderful charity dinner with the most incredible angelic voices....truly uplifting....The Robert Brewster Chorale is an acclaimed and accomplished group of singers ( all affected by the AIDS virus) who inspire audiences with a unique sound new to modern ears, classical in tone and contemporary in spirit. It is formed to use the remarkable medicinal power of music to inspire, motivate and educate a global audience about HIV/AIDS. (photo: With Cynthia Bailey and Kacy Duke) |
